Marquee Reader for Apple TV
Email hello@itr8.tech with questions, bug reports or feature requests. Our small team reads and replies to your messages.
Getting started
Adding your first feeds
Open Feeds and choose Add Feed. Enter a website address and Marquee will look for its feed. If you have no feeds yet, you can choose a starter list.
Typing without the remote
For easier typing, install the free Marquee Reader Companion on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Add feeds there to sync them to Apple TV. You can also share a page from Safari to the companion app.
Bringing feeds from another reader
Most RSS readers export an OPML file. In Marquee Reader go to Settings ▸ Import and give it the address of your OPML file to import your whole subscription list at once.
Common questions
Why hasn’t a feed updated?
Marquee Reader checks each feed about once an hour by default to limit requests to publishers’ servers. Change the schedule for each feed in the companion app or on the TV. Choose Refresh to check right away.
If a feed says Not responding, its server has been failing for a while and the app is retrying less often. If it says Removed by the publisher, the site has told us the feed is permanently gone, and the only useful fix is to remove it.
My feeds aren’t syncing to my phone
Sign in to the same iCloud account on both devices and enable iCloud Drive. Sync usually takes seconds but can take a few minutes. If you sign out, the app still works on your device, but changes will not sync.
How do I use the screensaver?
It appears on its own after the TV has been idle for a while (adjustable in Settings, or turn it off entirely). While it is showing:
- Swipe left or right to page through headlines
- Hold the centre button to open that article and read it
- Swipe up to mark everything as read
- Swipe down to leave the screensaver
You can have it draw from your newest articles or only from your starred ones, show one headline with its picture, and set your own photo as the background.
Can I make the text bigger?
Settings ▸ Text Size changes text size throughout the app. Marquee also supports VoiceOver and uses the appropriate voice for articles in other languages.
Is my reading history private?
We do not collect your reading history or require a Marquee account. The app connects to your chosen feeds and to iCloud for syncing. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Do I need the companion app?
You can add feeds and read on Apple TV without the companion. The free companion makes typing easier, lets you choose a screensaver background photo, and can export your subscriptions as an OPML file.
Reporting a problem
Please include these details so we can investigate:
- What you did, and what happened instead
- Your Apple TV model and tvOS version (Settings ▸ General ▸ About)
- The Marquee Reader version (Settings, at the bottom)
- If it concerns one feed, that feed’s address
